Periodontal Treatment
When the gum disease is in advanced stages almost most of the bone is already lost so the focus is on halting disease progression since bone recovery is challenging. Regenerative methods can sometimes help.
The main treatment is by deep cleaning the gums under local anaesthesia to eliminate the infection.
A surgical intervention might be needed for severe cases which also requires antibiotics.
It is important to undergo dental cleaning as recommended by the hygienist after the treatment, followed by excellent oral hygiene regime to follow at home for successful long-term management.
Step-by-Step Process of Treatment
The treatment involves a thorough cleaning of the gums with ultrasonic devices, root scalers and polishers to clear out bacterial plaque. This helps the inflammation to decrease, and the gums heal and reattach to the teeth creating a barrier blocking bacteria to pass through.
The process is divided into four sessions, each targeting a different area of the mouth under local anaesthesia and so it will be a pain-free session which lasts approximately forty to fifty minutes. A slight discomfort is expected and common but a significant gum improvement is seen in a few days.
Advanced Periodontitis Approach: Regenerative Treatment
In severe periodontitis with significant bone loss, restoring the lost structures is crucial before any treatment. This is done using biomaterials like membranes, bone, and amelogenin to rebuild the affected areas.
